If you’ve ever shopped on Amazon or elsewhere online, you’ve most likely seen some combination of ratings and reviews at the bottom of the product page. You’re almost certainly going to gain some additional knowledge and perspective by reading reviews and ratings as a customer. What you may not have realized, however, is that as a Shopify store owner, reviews and ratings can help you just as much as they help your customers. Here’s why:
1. They improve user experience
As you may have experienced as a customer at another e-commerce store, reviews and ratings can offer unique insight and perspective which the customer wouldn’t otherwise have. Customers who have already purchased a product are very willing to share tidbits of information that they’ve discovered by using it, whether that’s praise, a personal experience, constructive criticism, or anything in between. This information can help future customers decide whether the product you’re offering is right for them, and unless you’re really trying to scam your customers, this is always to your benefit.
Yes, there will be those who decide not to purchase a product because of an objective review, but there will also be just as many customers who decide to go ahead and purchase a product on the basis of one or more of the reviews up on your Shopify store. And being as honest and as transparent as possible with customers will always benefit you in the long run. You’ll save money on returns and customer service, and there won’t be any question as to your business’ transparency and geniality. Furthermore, customers’ feedback may even help you improve and/or modify a product for the better. After all, they’re the ones who are using the product and will know what (if anything) is flawed or could be improved upon.
2. They gain a customer’s trust
Another thing to note is that customers really appreciate whenever stores, especially e-commerce stores, are open and honest with them. Including reviews and ratings on your store is an especially important step in establishing this sense of trust, especially if you’re selling a product that is likely to attract repeat customers.
Customers might contact you and ask questions regarding something they read in the reviews. If the review(s) they’re reading are objective and plausible, you should strive to be honest and friendly, and to empathize with the customer’s hesitations and point of view. Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself whatever questions you could see yourself asking if you were a customer at your own store. Then answer them openly and genuinely. This kind of excellent customer service may likely result in customers becoming and staying loyal to your brand - and these are the kinds of customers an e-commerce business should treasure.
3. They allow customers to interact with your store
Finally, ratings and reviews, if nothing else, are an attraction at the carnival that is your e-commerce store. It is completely in your interest to retain the customer’s attention and presence on your website for as long as possible, and reviews and ratings are definitely something they can look at while they mull over the decision of whether to purchase something or not. Furthermore, after having purchased a product or service, a customer who returns to the store to leave a rating or to write a review may even see another product or service that interests them.

Incentivizing customers to leave reviews is essential, as many customers who hadn’t previously considered writing a review to be worth their time will now be interested in leaving at least a rating from 1 to 5, if not a detailed and candid opinion on the product or service. You can incentivize customers to leave a rating or review through email, social media, or whatever form of communication you’ve established between yourself and your customers.
You can offer your customers coupons, discounts, or special offers/deals to leave ratings and reviews on your e-commerce store. Get creative! Just remember that allowing your customers to interact with the store and incentivizing them to become repeat customers is bound to pay dividends in the long run.
