One of the most gravitating aspects of a well-performing Shopify store tends to be the selection of images e-commerce store owners use to advertise their products and highlight their features. While the content of the pictures themselves should be given the most thought when setting up a Shopify store, the sizing of the images you choose and how that affects the layout of your store is an often disregarded topic that can significantly impact your conversion rates and the quality of your store.
What To Consider When Determining Image Sizes
While there’s no one ideal size for every image you show in your Shopify store, there are a few key guidelines you'll want to consider when designing and customizing the front-end layout of your online store.
Shopify maxes out the size of your images at 4472 by 4472 px (as this is 20 MB of data). Now, you might think that the bigger the images are, the better, as customers should be able to see everything clearly and in high definition, with the capability to zoom in on a specific portion of the image if they so choose. However, in truth, there are certain advantages to having smaller images and varying the sizes between different images depending on their purpose and placement within your store.
For one, the ability for customers to zoom in on images is available for any image larger than 800 by 800 px - and there isn’t really a noticeable difference in the quality of the images unless you’re selling something with an inordinate amount of intricate detail. On the other hand, however, bigger images will take a lot more time to load onto the page. In a world where the internet shows us much of what we’re looking for at lightning speed, all it takes is a few hundred milliseconds for a potential customer to close the tab and look somewhere else, which can be detrimental to your conversion rates.
What Sizes Should I Use For My Images?
While 4472 by 4472 px images may be appropriate in certain circumstances, the vast majority of images of that size may actually do more harm than good. For a better option, an average product image size of 2048 by 2048 px should be more than big enough to provide high-resolution detail, while still loading onto the page of your Shopify store pretty much instantly.
In addition, you also want to give some thought to the aspect of consistency. Ideally, the images in each component of your Shopify store - like the thumbnail, collection images, and slideshow beside your products - should all be the same size. A uniform size for each part of the store strengthens its visual appeal and will lead to a more professional-looking store. The slideshow images should be optimized for a short and wide frame, which according to Shopify should be between 1200 by 400 px and 2000 by 600 px. For both the collection images and the actual product images, there’s no limit on the size other than the maximum listed above - although collection images must be square-shaped.
